In 1911 a competition was held for the designing of a city for 25000 people and was won by an American, Walter Burley Griffin whose design, which was based on a series of geometrically precise circles and axes, very similar to the street patterns of Washington DC and Paris. Canberra is a totally planned city, having been designed before construction an as such is well laid out with wide streets, avenues and parklands.
Being only 2 hours drive from Sydney, makes the Australian Capital Territory very accessible for a weekend or mid week escape.
