Local History

Originally used as a watering stop in the 1840s for stock being overlanded from Queensland and New South Wales, on their journey through from Nor West Bend to Adelaide or Kapunda. The freshwater springs found here were called "Eudundacowi" or "Jadundakawi" by the local Ngadjuri People, this means "water from the ground". Henry Watson, built a grog shop near the springs in 1870 to supply the drovers, Irishman John Hann later subdivided the site and a hotel was built in 1870, and a town quickly grew around it including a flour mill, general store and houses. Religious persecution of the Lutheran German peoples of Prussia, and severe droughts in Europe had led to many of them settling in South Australia during the 1840's, and it was these Lutheran People who became the earliest settlers in Eudunda.

The connection of Morgan on the River Murray with Adelaide by rail in 1878 helped the district to thrive and brought about several large business ventures including the state's first farming cooperative, Eudunda Farmers Cooperative Society, which at its peak had 62 branches. It is now part of the IGA group of supermarkets. The co-op started in the 1890s when a group of German farmers met at Manns Hotel and decided that they should work together. The idea was that the co-operative could transport and sell timber and could collectively buy goods with the profits. Thus the local storekeepers, who were prone to charging large interest rates, could be by-passed. It was the German settlers of the area that built a local economy based on agriculture and many of their decendants continue that tradition to this day.

The Australian Cattle King, Sir Sidney Kidman, made a habit of resting his horses and cattle in Eudunda because of its excellent fresh water, en route to Adelaide or Kapunda from Queensland and New South Wales.

Possibly Eudunda's most famous resident was Colin Thiele, Author and Educator. He was born in Eudunda in 1920 and grew up around the town. Colin Thiele's books, of which he wrote over 100, include Sun On The Stubble, Fire In The Stone, Blue Fin and possibly his most famous Storm Boy. He was a highly respected teacher and later became a lecturer at Wattle Park Teachers College in Adelaide, where he went on to become Principle and later Director. His work in education in South Australia had a great and lasting effect on teaching. Colin passed away in 2006 in Queensland aged 85.
