Fleurieu Peninsula - South Australia
The Fleurieu Peninsula is Adelaide's Southern Playground, with beautiful coastal scenery, native and plantation forests, a wonderful wine region and lots of great places to visit. From Mclaren Vale in the north, to Victor Harbor in the south, Fleurieu Peninsula has loads of wonderful scenery to keep You coming back for more. The beaches are a treat, with safe swimming and relaxing at places like Normanville and Port Elliot, and great surfing beaches like Middleton, Waitpinga Beach and Parsons Beach.
The Fleurieu Peninsula is also wine lovers paradise, with many Wineries producing fine wines, one is never too far away, from the big well known labels to the smaller boutique wineries. Visiting the local wineries, is a great introduction to the history and heritage of the Fleurieu Peninsula, and while touring around You will be pleasantly surprised by the wonderful architecture and beautiful scenery. The wine areas are a little more scattered than in the Fleurieu Peninsula, but this makes for a great opportunity to tour through the region. Take the time to visit Langhorne Creek, Currency Creek, Inman Valley, and Mclaren Vale.
Victor Harbor is one of the largest centres in the region and is only an hour and a halfs drive from Adelaide. It was one of the original planned sites for South Australia's capital and is a great place to stay, enjoy and relax, with its lovely beaches, scenic hinterland, and the wonderful Granite Island with its little penguin (fairy penguin) colony. Victor Harbor is a great base to stay to sample the many wonderful places of interest in the area.
From Adelaide Fleurieu Peninsula spreads out like a triangle to the south. You can follow the coast south through Old Norlunga, and on via Yankalilla to Cape Jervis, which is the boarding point for the Kangaroo Island ferry.
Between Cape Jervis and Victor Harbor is the beautiful rugged coastline looking over Backstairs Passage. Along this stretch of coast the bush has been preserved as the Deep Creek Conservation Park which includes the southern most section of the Heysen Trail.
From Adelaide through the centre of the Fleurieu Peninsula to Victor Harbor, You can travel through the vineyards of Mclaren Vale and Willunga, and into the southern hills of the Mount Lofty Ranges and the lovely town of Mount Compass.
The coastline between Victor Harbor and Goolwa is a favourite holiday destination with Port Elliot and Middleton both popular for day trips and longer stay holidays.
